Hansel has never gotten over his experience with the witch in the woods. Gretel, his sister, is at her wits end and is looking for a counsellor. She goes into the village to see you, the village consultant, to see if you can help her.
“He startles really easily now too. Every time he hears a twig snap in the woods outside our cottage, he reaches for a weapon. Just last week, he nearly smacked me as I returned home from the market, all because he was startled by the bleating of an innocent billy goat in the yard. He looks haggard, and isn’t taking care of himself. I feel like he thinks about the witch all the time, but when I try to remind him that we had to kill her to save ourselves, he just avoids the conversation. He is very emotional, and he gets angry very easily. Can you help me? I just want my brother back.”
What would you say is Hansel’s immediate challenge? Is it clear that Hansel has a psychological disorder? Would you recommend for therapy? Why? Why not? If you would recommend him for therapy, what type of counsellor do you think he should go to see? If therapy is not an option, what can Hansel do to overcome his current challenges? How might Gretel help him? Provide at least THREE arguments as to why your preferred form of treatment would be beneficial for Hansel. Be sure to provide sources from the text, CAMH site, or other scholarly sources to support your arguments.
