PCN218 Research Methodology
Project Proposal
As part of the assessment for PCN218 you are required to write a project proposal.
Obviously you can minimise your workload by writing this proposal on the project
that you will eventually undertake if you proceed to the project phase of PH80,
however this is not a necessity.
Your project proposal should include the following sections. A significant component
of the proposal is a literature review (section 4) which s
hould be about 600 to 1000
words in length. You will need to discuss the project and the proposal with the
supervisor and an academic staff member (if the supervisor is external to QUT).
1.
NAME OF STUDENT
2. TITLE OF PROJECT
3. SUPERVISOR(S)
List names, r
esponsibilities, addresses and telephone numbers.
4. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED PROJECT
(a) Aims and objectives. Consider issues such as:
(i) What basic hypothesis do you plan to test?
(ii) What state of knowledge do you plan to reach?
(b) Justificat
ion. Include:
(i) Reasons why the investigation should be attempted.
(ii) Present state of knowledge presented as a brief review of the relevant
literature
(appropriate key references should be used).
(d) Method. Consider:
(i) General procedures to be used
.
(ii) Specific requirements to meet objectives.
(iii) Experimental and statistical approaches used.
(iv) Types of subjects, patients or objects to be investigated.
(v) Methods of data analysis and presentation of results.
5. EQUIPMENT
(a) Equipment required: whether available at QUT or elsewhere.
(b) Access to the equipment, e.g. if the equipment is hospital based when and how
often will you have access and will there be sufficient access to adequately complete
the project.
6. TIME PERI
OD REQUIRED
Indicate whether the project will be undertaken full

time or part

time and in which
semester(s). The following information may be presented in a

time

line

format:
(a) Commencement
(b) Completion of various stages
(c) Write up commencement
(d)
Completed first draft
(e) Completion of final report
(f) Oral seminar
Note: the final report and seminar should be completed by the end of the central
examination period of the relevant semester.
7. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
List any institution or private org
anisation which will assist financially, where
applicable.
8. COSTS
Expected costs to QUT, ie
(a) equipment, components and consumables
(b) workshop time and technical assistance
(c) other costs
Indicate the source/s of funds to cover the costs.
9. ETHICAL
APPROVAL
Any project involving human or animal experimentation requires ethical approval
from the QUT Research Ethics Committee and from the ethics committee at the
external institution where the project is undertaken (if applicable). It is not necessary
to obtain ethical approval for PCN218 purposes however it must be obtained if you
eventually proceed with the project.
10. HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
It is a statutory requirement under the Workplace Health and Safety Act that a health
and safety ri
sk assessment of all projects be undertaken before the commencement
of
the project. It is not necessary to do for PCN218 purposes however the relevant
forms
are to be completed and submitted if you proceed with the project.
