This essay will be a comparative analysis between Piper Kerman’s memoir Orange is the New Black and the Netflix show by the same name, written and produced by Jenji Kohan. Your goal will be to tease out the similarities and differences of the prison narrative and the TV show in order to make a larger argument. What does each accomplish; how does each accomplish this; what is the impact on the reader/viewer? Please note that it is not enough to merely observe; you really do need to take a stand. Choose the topic below as your starting point and develop an argument that is strongly supported by evidence from both text and series. As with your earlier paper, emphasize clarity and vividness of example in your paper, and try to consider the meaning and significance of the topic you choose. You may come up with your own topic, but show it clearly before you develop it. The main point to include in this essay: In Kerman’s memoir, nothing very dramatic actually happens, rather she presents an atmosphere view of daily life is women’s minimum security prison. In the series, by contrast, each episode presents a very dramatic story. For example, in the book, the situation in which Kerman finds the extra screwdriver turns out to be no big deal; in the show, she loses a tool, and it’s a very dramatic event. Likewise, in the book,Kerman offends Pops, but nothing really comes of it. In the show, Pops becomes her enemy and it’s very high drama. What is the impact on you as reader/viewer of the high vs. low drama? Which engages you more? Or do they both engage, though differently? What are the benefits and challenges of atmosphere, of high drama? In order to write this essay, please read the book and watch the Netflix. Introduction could start with the explanation about the book and express what you gonna write in this essay. Also need topic sentence and thesis statements. In your thesis you can write about what do you think about Piper? What is the difference in show/book? What sacrifice and what gain? Seems like book is too positive. Please make sure to read the book and watch the Netflix otherwise you can’t write this essay. Please ask me if you have any question.
