Essay 1: Rhetorical Analysis In your first essay you are going to engage in rhetorical analysis. Rhetorical analysis is the dissection of a writer’s argument to determine the writer’s effectiveness. Choose one of essays we have read in class and write an essay that examines what rhetorical techniques the writer uses, what evidence or proofs the writer employs to support his/her argument, and how effective the writer is in achieving his/her aims. You must use quotes from the text to help support your analysis. Remember, a good essay will have a strong, clear thesis that fully addresses the prompt, and it will have fully developed paragraphs that engage with the material in a complex way. It is also important to keep in mind that a writer’s effectiveness is not tied to whether or not you agree with him/her. In other words, you don’t have to agree with a writer’s argument. An effective argument is determined by whether or not the writer has achieved the aims he/she sets out to accomplish. Please also avoid research of what others say about this story. I want to know what YOU think about this. Come up with an interesting title that coveys the essays argument. Do NOT analysis the entire book. Just chapter three. Make sure to discuss: logos, ethos, pathos. Don’t start body paragraphs with a direct quote. Start with a topic sentence that makes a specific claim.
