‘Ideology’ has been one of the most important and influential concepts in social science, yet it is also one of the most contentious: there is fierce debate about how we should interpret and use this concept, and even whether we should use it at all. Rather than looking at different types of ideology, this module interrogates the concept itself, analysing the manifold ways in which it has been applied. Our focus will be on thinkers who have engaged with the Marxist tradition, either sympathetically or critically.
