The importance of keeping accurate and complete case notes for every client cannot be stressed enough

The importance of keeping accurate and complete case notes for every client cannot be stressed enough. Not only do case notes help document client progress, but they may also protect counselors from lawsuits. For instance, lawyers may subpoena case notes in order to disprove a client’s allegations of counselor wrongdoing, and in many circumstances, case notes may hold more weight in a court of law than a counselor’s testimony. It is therefore of the utmost importance for counseling students to diligently practice case note writing and routinely incorporate feedback from supervisors and peers, in order to continue to hone skills in this area.
