Sociology assignment

You will need to pick ONE essay topic over the semester and write an essay, following the guidelines (see syllabus) and deadlines. So go over the topics early enough and try not to postpone this assignment to the absolute deadline. It can get VERY hectic and stressful at the end of the semester. BELIEVE ME.

I will provide you with more detailed instructions closer to the deadline.

SUBMISSION: Once you have completed your essay, submit your Word document to the drop box located at the bottom of this page.

  1. Are prisons effective total institutions or do they more commonly fail in their goal of resocialization? Please compare and contrast how a conflict, or a functionalist theorist would analyze this part of the criminal justice system.  Please base your response on refereed sociological empirical research done in the US.  Present your evidence in a clear manner (present data in a table or graph) and draw logical conclusions from the evaluation and analysis of the information you collected.  Finally, discuss the social relevance of the topic on a local, national and or international scale, and propose solutions.

As an example you may use the case of white collar crime. Do you understand and can you analyze the opportunities for white collar crime, the complexity of social and economic relationships that can be manipulated and exploited by white collar offenders, as well as the strategies used to commit and cover-up white collar offenses?  How are race, gender or social class catalysts for committing or covering up such offenses?  The crime you analyze should be complex enough to “show off” your sophisticated analytic abilities.

Present your evidence in a clear manner (present data in a table or graph) and draw logical conclusions from the evaluation and analysis of the information you collected.  Finally, discuss the social relevance of the topic on a local, national and or international scale, and propose solutions.

  1. Academic researchers as well as media commentators frequently argue that race relations in the United States have worsened considerably over the past decade.  Is this true? If you were a sociologist, how would you go about investigating this claim? If indeed this is an accurate assessment, what are some of the factors that may have contributed to this trend? What sociological perspective might you use in your analysis?

Present your evidence in a clear manner (present data in a table or graph) and draw logical conclusions from the evaluation and analysis of the information you collected.  Finally, discuss the social relevance of the topic on a local, national and or international scale, and propose solutions.

  1. While examining the global economy, it quickly becomes apparent that the overwhelming majority of the poor are women and children. Please indulge in examining thoroughly at least three countries where this phenomenon exists.

Present your evidence in a clear manner (present data in a table or graph) and draw logical conclusions from the evaluation and analysis of the information you collected.  Finally, discuss the social relevance of the topic on a local, national and or international scale, and propose solutions.
