According to Kenny (2006, p. 22), “The community development approach to the problem of disadvantage in our society [also] challenges the common sense framework in which the social problems are often conceptualised”. What does Kenny mean by this?
What is “the commonsense framework” for understanding social problems? What is “the community development framework for understanding social problems?
Respond to Kenny’s statement. Write your essay using relevant theories of community development, social work, and social policy. Give contemporary Australian examples of community development that demonstrate a community development approach to the problem of disadvantage.
The essay is not an opinion piece but an analytical and critical piece of writing that argues for or against the ‘common sense’ understanding of social problems. Use and refer to a minimum of 6 books or articles, either from the required reading list or beyond.
I send the essay from last semester student titled “Community Development as Approach to Solve Social problem” in order to give you better understanding about what to do, a picture of the essay’s flow, but its just framework example, do not follow his essay as my lecturer would noticed.
The main resources for this essay is Kenny, S. (2006). Developing communities for the future. South Melbourne: Thomson.
The essay is expected to explain the definition, the advantages and drawbacks from each approach. And then to measure which one is better to solve the poverty/social problems with case study from each approach. The thesis statement and conclusion is social development is better approach than common sense/individualisation/traditional approach.
Note: Because the thesis statement is social development approach is better, the case study should explain why common sense approach in general failed to solve social problem, and give example of successful community development program.
