Refer to NSW BOSTES Science Stage 6 Revised Support Document, ‘Open-ended investigations’ (pp.35-43) and to the NSW BOSTES Biology Stage 6 Syllabus, ‘Module 8.3: Patterns in Nature’ (pp.25-28) and particularly to Section 2: Membranes around cells provide separation from and links with the external environment. In this section, students learn to “perform a first-hand investigation to demonstrate the difference between the effect of surface area to volume ratio on rate of diffusion.” (a) Refer to the module content that should be covered during this investigation, i.e. Students learn to and Students columns and prepare a handout for students that provides an example of one way they could undertake this practical investigation. The handout should cover the following areas: The problem to be investigated; The design of the investigation that allows valid and reliable data and information to be collected; Identify the most appropriate equipment needed to undertake the investigation; Conducting the investigation (provide details of where and the time involved and how the data will be collected and recorded); How the data will be processed; How the results of the investigation will be communicated; and How the findings and investigation plan could be evaluated.
