In the federalist papers, madison wrote that the US would solve the perennial political problems of despotism and violent factionalism by encouraging society itself to be “broken into many parts, interests, and classes of citizens” that no single sect or pair of sects would be capable of attaining enough power to undermine the common good or fringe the rights of minorities.
