Paper of exterior analysis of an architecture in NYC

Assignment Requirements

PLEASE NOTE: THIS ASSIGNMENT MUST BE DONE FROM THE ORIGINAL BUILDING. ANY DEVIATION FROM THIS REQUIREMENT CONSTITUTES ACADEMIC DISHONESTY AND WILL BE TREATED ACCORDINGLY.

Please go and look at the following buildings. Choose one to be the focus of your first paper. Choose a building with which you are not familiar! Be prepared to spend some time at the building you choose. Take a good long look (in fact, take several looks) at your building’s exterior; be sure to look at it at varying times of day.

IN ORDER TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR YOUR PAPER YOU MUST SUBMIT,

in addition to your text:

  • a photo of yourself at your building
  • a hand drawn map of the building and its environs

Your map must include the salient elements of the general site/area as well as the exact location of the building. This map does not need to be fancy or sophisticated! DO NOT use a template such as Google Maps; create your own map from your exploration of the area.

Submissions that do not follow these instructions will be penalized!

Write a concise (3 to 31/2 pages, double-spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins), well-organized and well-written paper in which you describe, analyze, and interpret the building’s exterior.

This assignment is intended to help you further understand and articulate how a building’s formal properties convey meaning. The paper is, therefore, an exercise in looking. It is NOT a research paper. Do not consult any sources outside of the building itself – no books, no pamphlets, no employees, no websites, no online photos, no papers, no plaques or signs, NOTHING! If you use outside sources, you will receive a failing grade (0). In addition, refer to the syllabus for the consequences of both plagiarism and collaboration.

Your paper is to be an expository – i.e. an analytical – essay and will be graded on both content and presentation. As an expository essay, your paper will be more formal than your weekly NYU Classes assignments; be sure to write in the third person (i.e. do not use the pronoun “I”). In addition to complete content, be aware of such writing issues as general organization and structure (have an opening/introductory paragraph with a clear thesis, ordered paragraphs with discussions of discrete topics, clear transitions between paragraphs, a closing paragraph that ties your discussion together, etc.), using complete and clear sentences, appropriate word choice, correct spelling, proper grammar and punctuation, etc.

NOTE: Avoid personal interpretations – in other words, do not see symbolic or dogmatic meanings where they do not exist – and “art gush.”

DO NOT CONSULT ANY OUTSIDE RESOURCES! DO NOT PLAGERIZE!!!!
