Full Hypothesis: My hypothesis is that the use of opioids to treat painful crisis in patients with sickle cell disease is associated with lower same-day and subsequent day pain, as well as fewer health care contacts. In addition, I believe there is a significant risk for opioid dependence and abuse in this population, but that this risk can be successfully minimized with specific guidelines on opioid use for pain management.
Task: Through a critical review of the medical literature, the student will attempt to answer a relevant current medical care question using evidence published in medical literature. Effort should include arguments for and against, and evidence of original thinking by the student in coming to a conclusion. The final product will be a 20 page double-spaced publishable paper with references to the literature cited. This is different from a summary of the medical literature on a specific topic, which is not acceptable to fulfill this requirement.
The final paper should summarize the status of your research question, with particular attention to areas of uncertainty, include one or more Evidence Tables (see below) that demonstrate the evidence that addresses your research question, and recommend a logical next step for research.
If you can AVOID internet sources, please do. I will upload more than 20 articles that should be good enough to be used. If you can also find acceptable medical books/other literature, please use that as well to assist in writing a publishable-quality research paper.
Must Include (I will upload a word doc with the FULL description, entitled Research Paper Guidelines):
A title page with the author’s name
An introduction with background information
The methods used
A results section with tables and figures
A discussion/interpretation of the results
A bibliographic list of the literature cited
Also, I hope the number of pages are for number of pages of the research paper itself, not included the title page and works cited pages.
