This module is about what networks do for organizations, and thus it is appropriate that the case focus on one of the unique contributions of networks — that is, the ability to conference people from widely distributed places. The development of easy-to-use and widely accessible conferencing arrangements has been some time coming, although one of the very first things done with the early ARPANET was to establish a conference call between two of the first three nodes. There is no shortage of technology available to organizations wishing to implement such approaches. However, Internet based conferencing is not just a technological issue, but a classic case of sociotechnical balance; in most organizations, the social arrangements for managing and incorporating conferencing are underdeveloped, and it is not clear just how to change the situation for the better. Any case of unclear management practices opens the possibility of potentially serious security holes; hence our interest in this area. Here is a description of some technical solutions to the conferencing problem: Amy Tierney (2009). Economic Downturn Poses No Problems for Web Conferencing Market: Report. Concrete Company Trades Travel for Web Meetings: Bye, Bye Frequent Flier Miles Network Computing.com. http://www.networkcomputing.com/other/229616567 When you’ve had a chance to read these articles, anything from the Background that seems helpful to you or anything else you may have come across, please write a short (5-7 page) paper discussing the question: How should we help our organizations to use Internet-based conferencing safely and effectively? In preparing your paper, you might want to think about some questions such as: What are the basic capabilities of computer conferencing? What does it do best? What does it not so well? What conclusions can we draw from the experiences of the companies mentioned here? What do we know about organizations that would either encourage or discourage conferencing? What else would you like to know about computer conferencing that’s not covered here? When your paper is done, send it in to CourseNet. Case Assignment Expectations: Use information from the modular background readings as well as any good quality resources that you can find. Please cite all sources and provide a reference list at the end of your paper. LENGTH: 5-7 pages typed and double-spaced The following items will be assessed in particular: Your ability to apply your understanding as related to networking and internet based conferencing Some in-text references to modular background readings (APA formatting not required)
