Choose THREE characters from The Golden Ass—one from the early chapters of the novel, set in Hypata, one from the central section of the novel set in the Robbers’ Cave, and one from Books 8-10—and discuss how each of them reflects a number of features that you think are essential to understand about the world of the ancient Mediterranean, and about the Roman world in particular.
a. For EACH of your characters identify TWO distinct characteristics or features (and please don’t repeat the same characteristics from character to character), and link these features to material covered in the textbook, in lectures, and in primary documents.
b. Then, for the final 1/3 of your total essay, discuss what you believe to be the overarching message of the novel, and how your chosen characters help reinforce this message.
