Surgical First Assistance in Operative Procedures
A 3000 word evaluative report reflecting on your learning experiences, in relation to the module learning outcomes. You will use the information generated within your question sheets, class work plus any reflections to discuss and evaluate how and where you were enabled to achieve the module learning outcomes and how this has been applied to your practice.
Choose two of your skills (I CHOSE HAEMOSTASIS AND SURGICAL FIRST ASSISTANT ROLE) and discuss in depth your learning curve during the
module. Do not forget to incorporate analysis of the boundaries of the role, including your clinical judgement, your accountability and responsibility etc. Include a skill where risk assessment can also be discussed. See your learning outcomes below:
2: Critically review and evaluate clinical judgement and practice, within the boundaries of the role, to ensure competent and safe assistance to the surgeon during clinical procedures whilst promoting an evidence-based approach to care.
This learning outcome can be achieved when you are discussing your two skills by
demonstrating how you’ve used your clinical judgement by keeping your patient safe.
An example would be if positioning a patient care has been taken to ensure that no possible nerve damage could be caused through inappropriate positioning. This can also be achieved when discussing risk assessment.
Critically examine the issues of accountability, responsibility and role limitations across professional boundaries of advanced practice, demonstrating knowledge of
own scope of practice.
This learning outcome can be achieved as either a separate section straight after the introduction or it can be incorporated in a skill, for example retracting tissue and organs. Here you need to d iscuss what you understand by accountability and
responsibility, bring in your Codes of Practice and Scope of Practice and understanding the boundaries of the role.
Reflect critically upon the need for risk assessment and guidelines in relation to the Surgical First Assistant role.
This learning outcome can be achieved through picking one of your skills and
applying the process of risk assessment whilst discussing your skill in respect of your own learning and critically analysing the safety implications of your skill. So for example camera holding, if you had to do a risk assessment on camera holding in accordance with the Health Service Executive (HSE) (2009) 5 steps process you can analyse your own learning experiences in relation to the risks that would be identified on your risk assessment. You should also explain to the reader your understanding of the risk assessment process.
Don’t forget to conclude your essay by a small conclusion detailing how your
enhanced skills experience has made you more knowledgeable and experienced

Please note when applying your reflective model many past students have
lost marks because they have for example used Gibbs model of reflection
but then missed out a couple of the sections i.e. This model requires an
action plan at the end but most students completely miss this off.
Therefore we recommend that whichever model you chose you use the
headings EG. ‘What’ ‘So What’ and ‘Now What’ as per Borton’s model.
That way you do not miss out and lose marks for not applying the
reflective model. The marking criteria is specifically for reflection so it
marks against the application and accuracy of your reflective model.
The first thing I will do with your essay is read through and tick off the references in your text with those in your reference list. You can do that yourself and make sure that the references are the same and that all references in the text appear in the reference list and viceversa.
So to summarise a list of what should be in your essay:
1. Introduction to include mention of your two skills and choice of reflective
model with rationale for your choice and a demonstration that you understand
the reflective process.
2. Discussion on accountability, responsibility and the legalities to include
discussion around your Scope of Practice, Duty of Care, Codes of Practice,
vicarious liability.
3. First Skill applying reflective model
4. Second skill applying reflective model
Risk assessment to be applied to one of the skills. However, if you choose to identify a patient and apply both skills to the same patient instead of separately then that is accepted as long as you cover all the learning outcomes.
5. Conclusion
