CASE STUDY AIMS
Critically discuss niche tourism product, opportunities and possible outcomes of its development in chosen destination.
O OPPORTUNITIES + PRODUCT DESIGN
O To research and interpret market trends and match and (re)design niche tourism products appropriate to particular destination
O To demonstrate ability and knowledge necessary to target niche markets in a more effective manner, according to the needs of business as well as market demands
O When choosing a topic:
O Case study must be appropriate for this module (niche or even sub-niche form of tourism)
O When choosing a destination:
O Ensure that you can get sufficient information before you embark on the research
O If you’re planning to choose destination abroad, you can / should use data available in the local language
WHAT IS A CASE STUDY?
O Case studies provide with real-life examples of issues and problems found in particular workplaces or organisations.
O Case study assignments give the opportunity to relate theoretical concepts to practical situations and require to use analytical and problem solving skills to examine:
O what has happened and
O why it has happened.
CASE STUDY APPROACH
• Analytical approach
• The case study is examined in order to try and understand what has happened and why.
• Problem-Oriented Method
• The case study is analysed to identify the major problems that exist and to suggest solutions to these problems.
There are usually eight sections in a case study:
1. Synopsis/Executive Summary
2. Findings / Problem statement
3. Discussion / Alternatives
8. Appendices (if any)
O Outline the purpose of the case study
O Describe the field of research – this is usually an overview of the company (or in this case form of niche tourism and destination chosen)
O Outline both, the issues and findings of the case study without the specific details
O Identify the theoretical concepts that will be used
Here, the reader should be able to get a clear picture of the essential contents of the study
O Identify the scope and scale of niche tourism form in chosen destination and show the link.
O Support yourself with facts and relevant theory and course concepts
O Here, it is important to search for the underlying problems, as first impression might not be correct
This section is often divided into sub-sections, suggested sections include:

O Appropriate theories and concepts used and ability to apply them to the chosen case study shown?
O Research skills in uncovering a range of sources of information for the topic selected shown?
