You will be required to complete a term paper over the first ten weeks of the course, and to be turned in at the end of week ten. This paper will be worth 200 points (20% of your grade). I expect it to be between 8 and 10 pages long, double-spaced, 12 point font, with a cover sheet and a properly formatted reference page in APA format. I will grade the paper primarily for content and ideas presented but also for spelling and grammar. When you produce any type of written work in a business environment, it will likely receive a lot of scrutiny from managers above you. Therefore, it is important to learn to do college-level writing now so that it becomes second nature to you.
I would like the subject to be something to do with ethics in purchasing either in the U.S. or globally or both. You may pick a company that has had ethical issues or an article about something that has happened that is interesting to you and then analyze it carefully. What happened, what could have been done to prevent it, what are your thoughts about the issue and how might you have reacted as the C.E.O., etc.? You may, if you wish, pick some other aspect of purchasing as long as it is approved by me before you begin writing. I expect whatever subject you choose to “tax” your brain a little and make you consider several different sides of an issue.
