For this assignment, you will need to study chapter 34 (Integrating Sources) in The Bedford Guide for College Writers. Your assignment is to write a seven-paragraph essay about the chapter. I am providing your thesis for you. Your thesis statement should be “Integrating sources ethically and effectively involves paying close attention to five important things.” You, however, must craft the rest of the introduction–including a plan-of-development sentence–and, of course, the rest of the essay.
BIG HINT: The second-level subheadings, printed in red in your text (pages 690, 692, 694, 695, and 698), are your friends. I can’t make it any easier than that, folks.
Considering the need for an introduction, a conclusion, and the number of supporting arguments necessitated by the thesis statement, if you do the math you will understand why your essay should be seven paragraphs in length.
Practice applying what you learned from week 1. That is, if you quote, summarize, or paraphrase, you need to cite the textbook, and you need a Works Cited page with the textbook cited properly. (Review pages 727 and 728 from week 1). Because of the nature of this assignment, you will need to break the 70-30 rule that you read about in week 1. In other words, you will be quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing for most of your paper. (Just don’t do too much direct quoting. Practice summarizing and paraphrasing. But remember, you should use parenthetical citation even when you summarize or paraphrase.)
