The FINAL paper should be a 4-5 page research paper. Paper Ideas: These are only ideas, examples, to get you started…but brainstorm on your own. A good place to start looking for ideas might be the APA.org website. Causes of Autism ▪ New trends in eating disorders How prescription / illegal drugs affect the brain ▪ Memory loss and aging What happens in an IQ test? ▪ How people cope with stress and loss Research a person who has a mental illness ▪ Types of therapies How prenatal health affects babies ▪ Gender differences in…? How sleep affects mood ▪ How food affects mood Does media violence affect behavior? ▪ What shapes personality? What areas of the brain affect…(behavior)? ▪ Types of social influence Is there an addictive personality? ▪ What are treatments for drug abuse? You will notice that these examples are more in the form of questions about a topic, instead of just “Eating Disorders.” If you can, streamline your paper to focus on a question, rather than a very broad and general topic. Format: The first page of the paper should have your name on it and a title that summarizes what you’ve studied. The papers should be 12-point font. They should be uploaded to the website as a Word or Text document into the “Assignment” drop-box. Using outside material? Since these are research papers, you will have to go out and find some new material. As professors, we always encourage students to venture into a library, but we know there are many ways of getting information today. You should be using at least 3 sources in which you get your material. Although wikipedia is very tempting, I’m asking that you not use this as one of your sources. Anyone can edit a wiki, so it isn’t always accurate information. It could be useful for you personally, but I’d rather you use other, validated sources – such as a national organization (National Institute for Mental Health, American Psychological Association, etc.). Also, I would love for you to log on to our library’s website: http://library.ncc.edu/ There are online databases where you can get free articles (journal, magazines, newspapers). Referencing material you’ve used: Papers should be referencing any material included in your paper that is not your own words, or even closely related. Please refer to the handouts in the APA STYLE folder. APA style is the format psychologists use to write papers. Some of you may be more familiar with MLA style. **If you are more comfortable with MLA, then write reference your material this way. They are very similar. The main point is that I want you to give credit to where you found material that isn’t your own words.
