Dutch Herring Production
The Dutch Republic was the leading trading nation with advanced economy in Europe between the years 1550 and 1650. The herring fisheries played a crucial role in the country’s success. During the 1560s, some towns formed a political body that granted jurisdiction over the whole herring industry from getting the herrings to processing and distributing them. The use of fish gear, the length of the seasons, and the size of herrings were regulated with an intention of maintaining the quality of the best brand of salted herrings in Europe (Van Houtte).
