Last week we did the lab on DNA Structure and Function. You know the structure of DNA, how DNA replicates itself, how DNA synthesizes RNA and how RNA moves from the nucleus of the cell to the ribosomes where protein is synthesized. This process has gone on since the dawn of life. Each species is the result of the trial and error process of natural selection.
In the last 25 years we have learned enough about DNA to be able to manipulate and change the DNA structure and can “genetically engineer” our foods to produce traits like longer shelf life, resistance to disease, grow with less water and fertilizer, and even Idaho potatoes that grow to the same size so all McDonald’s french fries are the same length. Drugs are being genetically engineered to cure and control diseases. AND, we are on the dawn of being able to make non-life threatening cosmetic changes in humans who can afford them.
Please use a search engine and type in “genetic engineering” and find an example you find interesting. Start a thread and describe it. Then respond to at least one other students findings. The controversial topics are more fun.
