Choose two of the following essays and discuss them completely. Use specific quotes from the short stories that you are using in each essay. (The stories you use must be ones that we have done in class.) You may use your notes and your text books.
The two essays I chose in class are as follows:
- Authors often use problems in society as their themes, such as racism, mental illness, aging, violence, etc. Choose three short stories that we have read this semester which have a societal problem as their theme. Identify the specific societal problems and discuss thoroughly how each author handles this problem and what outcome is presented in the short story. (use specific quotes from the short stories themselves. Be sure to include parenthetical citation for each quote)
- Women are often central characters in stories. Choose three short stories that we have read this semester in which women are the central characters and discuss thoroughly how they are presented. (Do they seem to be stereotyped or are they independent, free thinking, etc.) (Use specific quotes from the stories themselves. be sure to include page number in parenthetical citation for each quote)
The stories we have read in class are in The COMPACT Bedford Introduction to LITERATURE Reading, Thinking, Writing Book by Michael Myer.
