1.    Analyse one example of an authentic text (30 words minimum either monologue or dialogue) in a sub-variety of English from one of the ‘inner’ ‘outer’ or ‘expanding circle’ countries (excluding ‘standard’ British, American/Canadian or Australian/NZ English). Avoid songs, poems or comedy examples. The variety of English that you discuss in this assignment is not limited to the varieties that are discussed in the lectures. Focus on the following four categories: phonology, lexis, grammar, and pragmatics.  Compare these features of this variety of English to either standard British, American/Canadian or Australian/NZ English.  The variety of English chosen needs to be one that is widely used and understood in a community and is not an interlanguage (e.g. English spoken by beginner students of English).  The analysis should show how the language in the example differs from standard British, American/Canadian or Australian/NZ English.  Include possible reasons for these differences.

Do not use an extract that was used during the lectures or which appears in the textbook ‘World Englishes’.

Reference the source of the extract.

Number each line of the extract for easy reference in your analysis.

2.    Provide arguments and evidence to show why the promotion of the same variety of English in the schools and in the media in a country would be more advantageous or disadvantageous when compared to the promotion of standard British, American/Canadian or Australian/NZ English.
