Here are a few tips to remember as you write: o Do not use direct quotes. o Proofread! Look at grammar, spelling, verb tense, sentence structure, redundancy, etc. o Use a formal writing style. Do not use contractions (e.g. don’t) or personal pronouns (I, he, she, etc.) • Include the following components: o Abstract: An abstract is a short synopsis of the entire paper. It should be no more than ½ page and should be written last. However, this is included first, just after the title page of your paper. Keep it brief and summarize each section of the paper, but DO NOT just lift sentences from each section. o Introduction:In the introduction, you should give some general background on your subject. This should include information such as a definition, history, and prevalence of disease. o Body of Paper: In this section, you will research and present the following information. Make sure that you carefully organize your paper so that the parts flow well. I. Affected System(s): This should include NORMAL anatomy and physiology of the affected system(s). What does a healthy system look like? How does it function normally? How does this system work to maintain homeostasis? II. Disease Process and Etiology: What causes this disease (etiology)? How does the disease progress? III. Signs and Symptoms: Which signs and symptoms arise as a result of this disease and why do they occur? Why does the body react this way? Explain how the failure of homeostasis causes the signs and symptoms listed. IV. Diagnosis: How is this disease detected? What tests are performed (if any) and what do doctors look for? V. Treatment and Prevention: What is the treatment for this disease and what does it do to change the disease process? Is there a way to prevent the disease? VI. Research: What specific current research studies are being done? o Conclusion: Write a strong conclusion to wrap up and recap your paper. o References: Include at least 5 peer-reviewed references to be cited in the body of the paper and listed in the references section.
