I noted a number of references to the importance of color in this week’s reading. (Monet’s evoking of form by means of color (Book 5, 118); juxtaposition of “glaring, piercing colors in Japanese woodblock prints (Book 5, 122); “van Gogh’s expressive use of color invests nature with visionary frenzy (5:136); “Gaugin’s colored shapes evoke moods and ideas that lie beyond literal description (5:137); Seurat treated color as analytically as a modern laboratory technician (5:138) Try to engage with color in this week’s art. Is it accurate to say that these artists were more concerned with paint than with what was painted? If so, why? If not, why? How did the invention of synthetic paint affect art? Is it fair to suggest that technology had a major impact on pictorial style?
