Here is the specific instruction:
1. The introduction should: introduce your media text (movie, TV show, documentary, radio, website, Facebook, etc) and be specific, your analytical framework, and state your thesis (argument). Tell me why is it important to look at that particular media text. What does it tell us? No fluff. Example of thesis statement:
I will argue that, looking through the lens set out for us by Anna McCarthy in The Citizen Machine, we can understand the TV show Gossip Girl as instructional. The show presents specific ideas and coping strategies for violence against women. Unfortunately, these strategies fail to recognize the complexities of intersectional identities, where not all women experience violence in the same way or require the same coping mechanisms.
2. One page long
1. Analytical framework of readings. Explain the concepts and arguments you will be using and adapting for analyzing your media text. Dont just refer to these here, but throughout the paper, when necessary. Tell me why it is important to talk about your media text with that lens. What does it enable us to see or think about? (3 to 4 pages about the concepts from three readings. Also one paragraph explains how those concepts can work together to be able to analyze the media.)
2. Analysis of the media text. 4 to 5 pages. Develop your argument from one paragraph to the next, providing examples and closely reading the media text through the lens that you have constructed from that three readings. What issues are raised? What are the larger narratives happening here?
Conclusion: Re-state thesis and sum up findings. How has your analytical lens impacted your analysis? If you have discovered some kind of injustice in representation or access to media, suggest what can be done about it.
