The American Gilded Age was filled with contradictions. While the United States projected themselves to the rest of the world as a land of opportunity this was not necessarily the reality of the time. Discuss what was going on in New York during the nineteenth century in terms of social class issues, the rise in gender equality, and the reality of living conditions in the urban environment of New York. Be sure to address how authors like Walt Whitman chose to glorify the promises of the “land of opportunity,” compared with how photographers like Jacob Riis displayed the other side of this increase in immigration to the United States, and artists like Mary Cassatt visualized the world around them. Possible topics include but are not limited to:
Jacob Riis
Walt Whitman
Documentary Photography / Photo-Journalism
Expose Snapshot
Women’s Suffrage Movement
Mary Cassatt
