Writing on a Reading
Each week a reading is set for class discussion.
i. Choose a reading that interests you (presumably after we have discussed it
in class).
ii. Read through it carefully and extract section of the reading or an idea it
raises that you would like to explore further through independent study. Use
this section of the reading as the premise for your piece of writing.
iii. Reproduce this section of the text as a quote at the top of your paper, and develop a critical insight which seeks to understand, explore and apply the
idea, written as a formal research essay.
To help you with this task I have annotated the weekly readings. Please don’t feel limited by my ideas, my notes are not comprehensive, but by all means make use of them in any way you like. My comments are meant to suggest how you might like to select something for your research paper, nothing more.
iv. The ‘additional readings’ listed on the website should help you with your task. Please consult at least three referred sources to develop your ideas, in
7
addition to the reading on which you have based your paper. The key texts for the course should also be consulted (listed below). Footnotes and bibliography are mandatory.
v. You may like to choose a portrait object to discuss alongside the idea, applying your understanding of the concept to your chosen work. Alternatively, you may wish to deal purely with the idea itself. The choice is yours.
